Limb Deficiency Program

The Limb Deficiency Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta addresses the medical, therapeutic and emotional needs of children and adolescents with congenital or acquired upper- and lower-extremity limb deficiencies. This comprehensive program also addresses the needs of families facing the challenges of these conditions. Our primary goal is to assist children, adolescents and their families in achieving optimal independence and functioning at home, school and play.

Rehabilitation services are available on an ongoing basis for children undergoing limb-lengthening, limb-salvaging procedures and prosthetic training. Certified prosthetists provide advanced technology in designing both upper- and lower- extremity prostheses, including myoelectric and conventional upper-extremity prosthetic options. All prostheses are designed on-site.

Coordination of community services is available to enhance recreational and social interactions, supporting the child’s growth toward independence. Physical and occupational therapists are available on a daily basis for consultation, evaluation and treatment.
