Orthotics and Prosthetics Program

The Difference Between Orthotics and Prosthetics

An orthosis is a brace made to correct or support a deformity or deficiency of your child's body. A prosthesis is an artificial limb utilized when a child has a limb deficiency.

Your orthotist or prosthetist is a trained specialist in the field with an extensive educational background. There are strict guidelines and procedures that he/she must follow in order to become an American Board Certified practitioner. Your orthotist or prosthetist is only one member of your treatment team. Other members include orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and pediatric physiatrists (a physician who specializes in rehabilitation medicine). The team works together to provide optimal care to your child.
